Does the DADT Repeal Actually Allow Gays to Serve Openly in the Military?

Frankly, I never saw the problem with the law:
...DADT is not really a full-fledged “conservative” policy. Enacted in 1993 under President Clinton, DADT is, by any reasonable measure, a middle ground policy.

DADT doesn’t bar gays from serving in the military, even though homosexual conduct remains against military regulations. As a concession, the conduct is overlooked, just so long as that conduct is not paraded in front of everyone.
My recollection is that the point of the original DADT law was NOT about keeping gays out of the military, but rather keeping military recruiters from asking recruits if they were gay. So repealing DADT means that they can ask that? Somewhat confusing what this law actually means.

But assuming gays are now allowed to serve openly-- gays are now allowed to openly belong to a group of people whose job involves killing and maiming innocent people. Great.

And the celebrity optics here are dumb.
